On June 3, 2021, the German Development Cooperation through GIZ, within the Action "Citizens' Empowerment in the Republic of Moldova", organized the national event "Solid waste management in the Republic of Moldova: challenges and solutions from civil society".

During the event, a position paper of civil society organizations regarding solid waste management was presented, which contains a series of challenges in the sector and recommendations to improve the situation in the field of SWM from the perspective of important actors, as well as detailing the role of civil society in this process:

  • The central public authorities will address the issue of waste management as one of the most important and will identify the most appropriate solution, based on the real situation in the localities and a constructive dialogue with local public authorities, CSOs and citizens.
  • Local public authorities will develop local waste management plans together with CSOs and active citizens, as well as systematically monitor their implementation.
  • Civil society organizations will involve residents in the widest range of activities, designed to increase their contribution to the waste management system.
  • The media will continue its mission to inform people fairly and impartially about the real problems of society.

More recommendations are presented in the Final Position Paper, available in Romanian, Russian and English.
